Something we are often asked is ‘when should I start working with an eating disorder recovery coach’?
Firstly, it’s essential to know that not all recovery coaches are the same. At Natural Food Therapy, our coaches are essentially eating disorder specialists.
Having trained in multiple disciplines from nutrition to counselling to eating disorders, and with a wealth of experience– our coaches are able to support you through several stages of your recovery.
Here are some of the best times to work with a multidisciplinary eating disorder recovery coach:
Right at the beginning
You recognise the eating disorder is present but may not feel ‘ready’ for change. A recovery coach can work with you from day one, connecting you with your motivation for recovery and then guiding you through the process.
Further down the line
You have been suffering for some time and are ready for change. You recognise how much of your time and energy is taken up by this illness. It’s time to have someone there to guide and support you through recovery.
After years of suffering
You have spent years receiving different types of treatment and support. All of which just haven’t been right for you. A recovery coach does things differently, meeting you where you are in your recovery and working closely with you to make changes that last.
Following inpatient treatment
Eating disorder recovery coaches do not tend to work with individuals during inpatient treatment. However, working with a coach is a powerful next step following this. A recovery coach can provide you with the support needed to continue progress long after you are discharged.
When you feel ‘almost’ recovered
Perhaps you have made it a long way through your healing journey, but also recognise that you haven’t reached a true or lasting state of recovery. It’s time to work with an experienced recovery coach who can guide and support you through these final stages.
During Relapse
Maybe you are feeling stuck or triggered and would like someone to support you through a difficult period of time. A recovery coach can help you and arm you with tools/strategies so that next time you can navigate triggers with ease.
